Our history

Humboldt Domestic Violence Services (HDVS) was originally founded by a community of women—some of whom identified as survivors of abuse—in 1977 under the name “Humboldt Women for Shelter”. The organization originally prioritized providing emergency shelter for women and children, but later expanded to include a 24-hour crisis line and other support services to better accommodate survivors of all genders.

45 years later, we are grateful to say that we are still able to provide these services, and appreciate the trust that our community members place in us. Our mission—to break the cycle of violence through services, education, and advocacy—remains at the heart of our work and reminds us of the continued need to engage in violence prevention and response.
